Check if the date is set correctly (i.e. you got the correct date / time via NTP).

The default system date/time on bootup is set by systemd to systemd's release date which is Jan 28 with systemd 237 and that's outside of the SSL cert validity period of April 26-July 25. If your system date/time is outside of that period cert validation will fail.

 Since it is working now and a curl to https://valid-isrgrootx1.letsencrypt.org on the command line also works I can only assume that indeed my system date was wrong. Should have checked that at first. Sorry for bothering everybody,
