Replacement for Raspberry Pi 1 Model B
#1
Hi all,

currently I am running Kodi (OSMC) on an old Raspberry Pi 1 Model B.

My current environment looks like this:
-Full HD TV
-Wireless connection ( 2.4 Ghz )
-Streaming transport stream files from a VDR server ( NFS shares )
-Streaming internet platforms ( Youtube & Co )
-Streaming movie files from USB device
-Navigate Kodi using CEC with the TV remote control

OSMC runs fine on that old RPi but now I would like to get a better all-over performance.
I also plan to buy a Dualband router device ( ASUS RT-AC68U ).

I am willing to invest about 50-100€ for a new Kodi hardware.

I read a lot in the forum and on other sites and picked out these devices:
-Xiaomi Mi Box
-RPi3
-Fire TV

Questions:
-Is it possible to autostart Kodi on Xiaomi Mi Box?
-Does Xiaomi Mi Box support ssh?

I really like Raspberry Pi but I would like to give Xiaomi Mi Box a chance.
What do you think?
Would that be a good replacement?

Thanks.

Q. How much do you value nice smooth video playback ?

Because if you do stay away from those Android devices you mentioned.

Q. Do you have a lot of old VC-1 Bluray's, and 1080i Interacted content that you use ?

Because if you do stay away from the Android devices mentioned.

You cannot SSH into the Mi Box - it runs Android not OSMC or LibreELEC.

A lot of people are buying the following because they handle current virtually all 1080p/4K video content and are also a bit future proofed - like hardware decoding of 10bit HEVC (h.265) 1080p/4K content - which the RPi3 cannot do:

AMLogic S905(x) - LibreELEC / OSMC - Kodi Krypton - 4K Options

Fast eMMC flash storage, a AML S905/S905X and OSMC/LibreELEC Kodi Krypton combined with a Wireless remote makes for a fast snappy setup. Quite a bit faster than a RPi3. Wink

Thanks for the reply and information. That points me into the right direction.

I will focus on a cheap or pre-owned AML S905(x) Android Box that can be rooted to install LibreELEC.

You won't need to root the box to install LibreElec. You will either reflash, replacing Android on the internal flash, or dual boot from a microSD card instead of booting into Android on the internal flash.

Thanks for the information.

Now I need to research some S905(x) devices that are fully supported by LibreElec and that matches by budget. :-)

I am still doing some research but I have another question.

Currently I have to stick with WLAN.
Should I focus on boxes that support 5GHz as well? I have no experience with streaming using a 5GHz wireless connection so far.

I'd focus on boxes that contain a wifi chipset that is supported via LE first.

These S905X boxes seem to be supported by LE including wireless, correct?

Beelink MINI MXIII II 2/16GB S905X
NEXBOX A95X - B7N 2/16GB S905X
Tanix TX5 Pro

I am not so sure, if NEXBOX A95X supports Dual Band wifi as well. Can anyone confirm this?
Availability of TX5 Pro is limited.

So my current fav box to purchase is Beelink MINI MXIII II 2/16GB or 2/32GB.

I am using Beelink MINI MXIII II 2/16GB S905X with libreelec installed on internal storage

everything is working perfectly including dual band WiFi

also google tv rom is available if you wish and you can dual boot android and libreelec using micro sd card

Link to freak tab s905x forum

very good thermal behaviour on long hours use, Highly recommended

Hope that will help you to decide
