Linux upgrading from OpenELEC 3.2.4 (on Aspire R3600)
#1
Hi, I'm new to this forum.

I have been using my Acer Aspire R3600 for many years with no updates. It's running Linux and OpenELEC 3.2.4. GPU is NVidia ION 9400M.

I'd love help on how to update to a more modern OpenELEC/Kodi. The wiki has no info on upgrading from such an old version of OpenELEC. I gather there's a special version of Kodi for this older platform and I am unsure which one to use. I'd love to update without having to move the media that is on the drive of the machine if at all possible.

Do I need to update the base Linux? Any benefit from doing that?

OpenELEC is a 1 package deal. You cannot update/alter Linux parts separately.

Since the development of OpenELEC seems to have come to a grinding halt, you may want to have a look at LibreELEC, which is a 'fork' of OpenELEC, but with up-to-date support and releases. Yes, your hardware is old and it may need some tweaks for proper GPU usage. But it should still be able to run Kodi.

Understood, thank you. So switching to LibreELEC would mean a complete re-flash of my machine I assume?
