Why run hardy? Karmic is old, lucid is released and xbmc runs fine on the development version.
Use mythicalLibrarian to make a library out of your MythTV files. Leave the recording to MythTV and use XBMC as your library.

Because some need Hardy on the AppleTV to do audio over HDMI, this requires a specific Nvidia driver that does not compile on anything greater than Hardy.

xbmc is currently building on the SVN PPA. So *fingers crossed*, I think we're going to be ok tonight. I've never wanted a build to succeed more in my life.

Wait a minute...so you are saying that an Ubuntu version newer than Hardy wont work if you want to use HDMI properly, regardless of GPU, or is this an AppleTV specific issues?

I did say "some need Hardy on the AppleTV to do audio over HDMI", that's a very specific statement. Don't read any more into it.
