Aside from price, would you use SSD's?

SSD prices are dropping fast, and it's *almost* to the point that media hoarders like us can start to think about using them. (almost)
If they do come down in price further, would you use SSD's to store movies/TV shows?

No, still using HDD's for that as they provide larger storage. Price/storage still is favors the hard disks.
I'm using SSDs for operating systems and a MySQL database for Kodi use.

4TB SSD's (affordable), are on their way from Samsung...

Will still be some time before we get to 8, 10, 12, or 16TB SSD's though.

640K is more memory than anyone will ever need.

 That's what I was implying.
With 1TB at just above $200, it's probably only a matter of time before it reaches $100. It *might* be worth looking at using SSD's for media storage.

It'll depend on the size of your media collection. Some people are happy with 1-2TB, others are just starting at 20+TB. Smile

What would be the advantage? Maybe power consumption. HDDs are still powerful enough for the storage of movies. But yeah, why wouldn't I. But that time is still quite far I would say. I have HDDs running 12 years without issues. SSDs need still to come to that point. So SSDs still need time proving.

SSD's are far quieter than even the 5400 rpm drives, they take up far less space, and there's even some "studies" that show that SSD's can last far longer than hard drives could.

And SSDs are quicker than HDDs when doing database stuff, certainly when comparing your average Synology-type NAS with MySQL database.

 Do the math.

Even if a 1TB SSD slashed its price to $100 instead of $200 or however much they go for.
1TB (actual size is 931GB) can only store (11) 80GB titles.
$100 wish price gets you 11 titles stored or $200 to store 11 titles using realistic figures.

An 8TB HDD sells for $130.
8TB (actual size is 7270GB) stores (90) 80GB titles
$130 gets you 90 titles stored.

So, $130 to store 90 titles vs $200 to store 11 titles isn't very hard to figure out where your best bang for your buck is.
Also, there are only so many drive letters available before you have to start dynamically joining drives together and that's even if you have enough SATA ports to plug them into, so size matters.
Performance wise, stored media could care less if it's on an SSD or HDD.  Both have more than enough throughput and you will notice zero improvement one vs the other.
Lastly, I've no idea how you 'hear' your HDD working after it's spun-up so the noise argument is ridiculous imo.  I've got (11) 8TB HDD's spun-up inside my HTPC right now and another (18) drives spun-up in my port duplicators and I can't hear a thing.  Even if I could, the media I'm about to play would drown any whisper quiet stethoscope mila-decible detection.
