I played around with 1.998 a little more this evening. I have found that the problem I was experiencing with folders not loading under TV Shows is linked to some difference in how 1.998 looks at nfo files. If you delete the existing tvshow.nfo, the folder will load properly and rebuild the tvshow.nfo. If you attempt to use the root folder load, it will work correctly until it encounters a folder with an old format nfo file still in existence. At this point, it will stop loading future folders and they will disappear from preferences. The simple workaround seems to be removing your existing nfo files and letting them be regenerated. However, this doesn't seem like desired behavior or should at least throw an exception message.
The problem with old style nfos seems to extend to episodes as well (though I only seemed to have this problem on a more hit or miss basis). Once I got the folders to load only some of the previously loaded episodes appeared. Clearing the episode nfos and researching (and thus rebuilding the nfos) also fixed this problem.
The fact that this is linked to having older nfos in the directories explains why folks with brand new installs weren't seeing any issues - no old nfos to cause problems.
Hope this info helps trace down the actual code issue and we can see a 1.999 that corrects all this (and hopefully doesn't have me deleting and rebuilding all my nfo files again - one of the key reasons I am using MC is so that I will have a build and forget set of nfos that I can rely on if the XBMC library ever needs to be rebuilt).
