It might help if you post a screenshot of one of your folders which clearly shows the artwork and music files, and the folder path.
Yes, Leia does support native scanning of extended artwork. Have you set it up correctly? Have you added your advancedsettings.xml artwork tags? If you go to an Artist or Album, and select Choose Art, can you see all your different artwork types displayed?
