The other reason to use 2 channels is that it exposes the 'Transcode to AC3' option for SPDIF/Toslink or first-generation ARC solutions which will take 5.1 content as AC3 but not PCM. (If you have 5.1 or 7.1 speakers selected you will get this content output in 5.1/7.1 PCM rather than transcoded to lossy Dolby)
