I am running the latest openelec and kodi and just got a new 7.2 onkyo receiver and speakers. I do not see the option for 7.2 channels. Should I just set 7.1? Will it work? I get its more or less the same channel twice but was just wondering.

Keep it on 7.1.

For HDMI and PT formats it won't make any difference, as we use 8 channels to send the compressed audio, which your AVR decodes - which is also the only way your second sub will get any data, not from us, but from your AVR after decoding. For 7.2 PCM content (does that even exist?) - you need to try it.

So, play sample that has 7.2 content, don't passthrough it (e.g. disable PT in linux) and post a Debug Log

Thanks very much for the response. I haven't myself seen 7.2 content but I was just making sure I would be able to get sound from the second sub. Thanks again!
