oh, I was testing by skipping to the end to see if it played the next one.
Strange the behaviour would differ depending on how long you've watched it.
The crashing may be related to this as well:

Not 100% though but seems without the above, changes of periods cause some issues, and there is about 6 very short periods at the end of lots of content for the credits.
Seems the issue shows up more on raspberry pi's.
Be interested to hear if the same happens on content without the Netflix style credits at the end.
Probably older movies may have a more simple period layout
