I have heard the argument that channel numbers don't matter but I specifically added a flirc and a remote with number buttons to my system, just for the experience of being able to type my channel that I want to watch (like I did on the old cable box days) - plus, like mentioned above, it makes it more "wife friendly" or family friendly for those of us with families who aren't necessarily as invested with our hobby as we are
