My humble opinion is that you are *seriously* downplaying the impact of that size increase when judging what you gained in going from 1080p to 2160p. Now, HDR it's a different story. That it makes a difference is undeniable.

With 8K the resolution benefit will be even less than that but, by all means, it will be good to have a choice.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first (usually it's enough to follow instructions in the second post).

Kodi is ready, I think the better question is: is the world ready for 8K?

Right now, there are hardly any movie/tv providers with proper 8K content (apart from some demo videos), and lots of the current 4K bluray content is simple up-scaled 1080p stuff. Do you already have an 8K display/TV? I have a 6-yr old Nvidia GT1030 card lying around somewhere, and it can already render 8K video in LibreELEC/Kodi.

It's just not much use without the proper content and with only a 1080p or 1440p display to look at...

Ugoos release s928x box named am8

https://androidtvbox.eu/ugoos-am8-is-an-...lby-audio/

Unlucky os is Android 11 and not a13 as amlogic press release one year ago

How is Ugoos about firmware release ?

I'm in doubt to wait for homatics A12 update or wait for s928 box that has more CPU power for heavy skin and Kodi library scan

I don't know about Ugoos' frequency of firmware updates but the bootloader is either unlocked or easily unlockable and you can root with a custom firmware like slimBOXtv.

Myself I don't care a whit for 8K but I would welcome better single-thread Python processing speed that a better SoC might provide.

thats a good assumption, google is unlikely to certify a device that allows you to steal it's keys and pirate content with it

follow up

there are now 2 devices with this chipset boasting 8K playback, some of the review videos look quite good

currently afaik none are google certified for L1 content so i will not be testing either of them but as soon as i can get one that is i will be having a go at it

Ugoos AM8 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLCKlr624KA
seems a bit generic on the android side, reminiscent of some really old android < 5 devices

X96 X10 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD9bqMz4Cho or English https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_F2xE-9Ac

Apart from digital signage applications, is there any purpose for consumer 8K other than watching YouTube videos? (Is there more 8K movie and TV show production in areas other than North America and Europe? I'm aware NHK has 8K broadcasting in Japan - but other than that?)

not that i am aware of

the sole purpose at this time would be future forward and youtube as you pointed out
better 4K playback on a device that handles 8K
for myself; i am holding back buying an 8K TV until i have a device that will do 8K (or a native app for said TV but i don't actually think that's going to be possible or a good option)
as has been pointed out some HTPC setups can do 8K already but i am not an HTPC enthusiast

and of course, just something to play with

I'm very much of the same view as @fritsch - buy the device that meets your needs now, paying more to future proof is often counter productive, as once the future arrives you'll end up replacing the device you bought to be future proof as something else will have come along that it doesn't do Smile

i do share that view, why i am waiting on the TV, being a major purchase i will get the best at the time that i purchase it
it did the same with my current TV and it's still one of the best on the market almost 5 years later

but for a device that i already expect to keep less than 1 year and costs less than $200 i would rather have it for testing and building up a content library
it wouldn't replace any devices i currently own, already this year i purchased 2 other devices that didn't replace the one i currently use

i suppose in simplest terms i would rather buy a BMW for commuting but wouldn't be opposed to buying the latest Ferrari just to drive it - even if it contained tech that will be deprecated in a couple years
( replace BMW with whatever is considered a solid dependable and comfortable car and Ferrari with whatever hypercar; maybe a koenigsegg Wink )
