Another 720p only android on a 4k tv

Hi,
Long time kodi enjoyer. First time kodi problem-haver.

I've had a laptop running kodi to a 1080p tv for several years and life has been fine. My young son has a tv in his room and we bought a kodi box for him too.

Last week, we purchased a brand new 4k samsung tv. The laptop is old and only capable of 1080p, so i decided to try my son's kodi box. It's advertised as 4k and the Android setting is showing 4k resolution. But in kodi it's only showing 720p in the resolution and in the whitebox. Kodi version is 20.2 i believe.

I tried playing videos and pressing the "z" button to check, as has been suggested in her before, and i can see that it's downscaling the vid to below 720p (due to the aspect ratio) .

The tv can connect to my file server and play files in 4k, hdr, etc, but it's obviously not as good an interface and does not show which episodes of shows we're up to. And I'm better off with the old laptop as at least it was 1080 viewing.

Is there any way to increase the resolution?

I'm about to try uninstalling and reinstalling kodi otherwise. Android is a little above my pay grade.
I've attached the log file that helps.

Thanks so much in advance.

Also, this is the box, if that's helpful.

question is, what resolutions are offered in the Android Settings?

it might be advantageous to load a small file onto a usb drive or sdcard and play it directly on the box outside of kodi to compare

im quite familiar with android but i am not familiar with the box you have purchased

if you are inclined you might find better results from using CoreElec on an android box, it tends to bring out the best of these boxes - providing you dont need android features and are capable technically

I'm currently trying to see how to get VLC to show me what resolution it's playing. But one 4k vid I'm using to test looks better in VLC than Kodi.

I'm not certain I'm cut out to install a new OS on it.

Also, here is that video showing it's resolution but what kodi is downscaling it to.

That log is no good as the debug logging was enabled after Kodi started, and the important bit is in the startup process where Kodi finds the resolutions the device if capable of. So after enabling debug logging you need to exit Kodi, and then start Kodi again to get this capatured. You should also see the reported resolutions in the the Settings -> System -> Display -> Whitelist see https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/System/D...hitelist_2

I swore i thought that's what i did. Anyway, I'll give it another go tomorrow.

The white list ONLY shows 1280x720. No other options.

Android is set to 4k. I'm not sure what res VLC is displaying, but the quality is much better than kodi. But not as good (or smooth) as directly via the tv.

Sounds like another Android device that locks apps to 720p.

Same movie in VLC. Not as good as via the tv direct. But much better than kodi.

Is it this part that's the problem?

This looks to be accurate.

I installed cpu-z to get what i needed to install coreelec, but found this.

Factory reset didn't help. So I have CoreElec running. Nothing but issues to begin with because one of the USB ports wont work. So i could either use the keyboard or the usb with the image. Not both. A trip downtown to get a microSD card to put the image on fixed that limitation.

CoreElec now runs perfectly fine in 4k, shows a huge amount of options in the white list, and even upscales lower resolution video to 4k.

Now to contact the suppliers and ask why they're software limiting their hardware so that it can't do what it says it will.
