To restore XBMC startup, mv off.xinitrc .xinitrc and reboot again.
Thanks, I booted to terminal and found out that my user 'xbmc' was not a member of the 'audio' group.
I did: sudo adduser xbmc audio
Restarted and everything works as advertised.
