In OpenELEC (XBMC appliance) we got the iFuse working. Music files are visible and playable, but unfortunately everything in the folders is mixed up. No albums together, but all spread over multiple folders. If libimobiledevice will be added to XBMC, this would solve the problem and make albums visible like they should be.
I'll add a screenshot(s) tomorrow to show how it works now.

Ok, here are some screenshots with a working iFuse on OpenELEC as told yesterday:

First connected an iPad, which doesn't contain music or videos, but it is well recognized. The path already taken before this screenshot is /root/media/:

Inside the iPad folder, it looks like this:

Music is stored in iTunes_control:

The same path for an iPod (which is also recognized as an iPod), here a screenshot from within Music:

And a screenshot from opening the Music folder through the library, as you can see all albums are mixed up, but the info inside the ID3tag is recognized:

https://launchpad.net/~pmcenery/+archive/ppa

I just played around with my XBMCbuntu install, used some hints from this how-to http://everydaylht.com/howtos/desktop/ip...-on-linux/ and packages from the above ppa. furthermore, because my XBMCbuntu install is server-based, I had to install package usbmount. (note: nodiskmount is already removed from my grub line)

via imobiledeviceinfo I can read out all the information from my connected ipod 3G, and with the help of the instructions from the aforementioned blog article, i mounted the ipod file system via ifuse into /media

i can now browse to the ipod in XBMC, but as you've seen with openelec, the folder structure is read as raw which means that all the albums are completely mixed up in various folders.

so to sum it up:

with the help of libimobiledevice, we are able to mount any ipod/iphone/ipad in the base system and have access in XBMC, but XBMC also needs to "see" the file system as an "idevice" which e.g. rhythmbox or gtkpod are able to do.

what I'd really like now is to have the necessary libs integrated into the XBMC distribution and have XBMC automount and recognize these idevices so that we are able to access some kind of local ipod library including the artwork stored on the ipod.
as a next step, another awesome feature would be to use the XBMC file manager to sync music between the ipod's local library and the XBMC library and/or mounted (network) shares with the help of libgpod

man that would be awesome!

libmobiledevice looks interesting!

Has any progress been made in this area?
I'm not sure you can call any media center a "media center" without catering to one of (if not the) most popular consumer portable media device(s).

Being able to come home, dock my device to XBMC to charge & sync, auto-unmount at 5am & take it when I lave would be pretty handy.

Another, much-less convenient option would be to load another media-player such as RhythmBox, Banshee or SongBird to manage the device for me
