I installed XBMC on Karmic this weekend, and some steps of the tutorial aren't needed anymore.
The provided LIRC works fine, but you do have to create the /etc/modprobe.d/lirc.conf so module gets the irq right, otherwise it seems to pick 7 which doesn't work.
When you install the lirc package (with synaptic, apt-get, ...), just pick "ITE IT8712/IT8705/IT8720 CIR port", and then just follow the rest of the configuration from kalimero's post, but don't do the modules part: it's not needed anymore.
