I think the best solution would be the one in the link http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/7953 - setting XBMC_HOME, if it works.
I got things working by renaming /usr/lib/xbmc/addons then creating a symbolic link with
Without that xbmc wouldn't even start as it couldn't find the confluence skin. Finally I found that within /usr/share/xbmc/addons there were some libraries that were symbolic links to files in subdirectories of the original /usr/lib/xbmc/addons, which were now broken. I fixed each of those to link via the renamed folder and PVR client worked!
It's by no means a nice solution (but at least I could watch Spain-Honduras), so I hope the XBMC_HOME trick works - I'll try it this evening
PS - I setup this box (Asrock ION 330) with these instructions HOW-TO install XBMC for Linux on Ubuntu with a minimal installation, an unofficial Step-by-Step Guide
My other installation, which didn't have the path issue, is a standard Ubuntu 10.04 installation with Gnome and XBMC is started from the Applications menu
