How can I get the asrock to recognise the remote it shipped with on XBMC live?

Unfortunately the ASRock ION 330HT build in IR Receiver doesn't work on Linux (and as such doesn't work in XBMC Live). Refer to this thread for more information: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=61840

You'll have to buy an USBMCE IR Dongle.

No idea yet. I blew more money on the postage than the remote to get it next day (today) and it didn't turn up

USB MCE remote turned up today but the drivers for the supplied remote were also released today Installed these and they work. Just trying to sort out power on / resume issues but it works within xbmc no prob
