How to configure alsa for HDMI audio
#1
There seems to be a lot of threads on this, and I've read through some, but none seem to address my particular problem. I've just added a new nvidia GeForce 210 video card and am trying to set up the audio in Fedora 12. alsamixer sees two audio cards, the onboard and the HDA NVidia. However when I select the nvidia it says "This sound device does not have any controls".

Here's my aplay output:
Code:
[Keith@klm ~]$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC889A Analog [ALC889A Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC889A Digital [ALC889A Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[Keith@klm ~]$ aplay -L
default
    Default
front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC889A Digital
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
[Keith@klm ~]$

I've tried
alsactl init 1
alsa store 1

But those didn't change anything.

card0 and card1 exist in /proc/asound and seem correctly identified. My asound.conf looks nothing like any examples I've found here.

Is there some way without reinstalling alsa to get it to configure the new sound device? I have 1.0.22 installed using the standard fedora stuff.

I have the same issue with my Asus GF210. Haven't been able to use it yet...

I'm dealing with an Asus too, Fry's had it on sale. If I find anything I'll post it here.

Well I disabled the onboard audio and now aplay and alsamixer show nothing. I can't figure out how in Fedora 12 to initiate sound card detection. It should have picked up that there was a new audio device, but it didn't. And alsaconf isn't in Fedora, and there used to be another Fedora specific sound card config utility, but that's gone. I've hit a brick wall.
