Why not use openelec.tv installer - will have you up and running in less than 15 minutes, ideal if you aren't comfortable working under linux.

No. OpenELEC will replace your ubuntu install. (or supplement it).

Have you done an apt-get update after adding the repositories?

apt-cache search xbmc should turn up xbmc.

Literally this is all one needs to do:
Code:
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-standalone
sudo apt-get update

Although I'll still stand by the fact that getting the LiveXBMC and installing to disk is MUCH easier for an 'up and running' system than trying to install on top of an existing XBMC.

theonlycraig: the commands are as straightforward as everyone says they are... unless you're running the newest version of Ubuntu, 10.10. Are you?

I only ask because I actually did the exact same thing, assuming it would work just fine... it did not. I had to roll back to 10.04 to install XBMC from the regular repository.

edit: just noticed this forum post. give it a try: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=85425
