User TEST appeal - Asrock ION XBMCLive dharma RC2

Cosma Wrote:I did some testing with the XBMCLive RC2 cd. After it was done booting i went to Videos, added the source to the testfile and then started playing it. There was really no sound at that point but after unmuting some devices in the Audiomixer i had working sound.

Settings in Audiomixer that made the sound work:
'Master',0 unmuted 100%
'Front',0 muted 00%
'Center',0 muted 00%
'Line',0 muted 00%
'IEC958',0 unmuted
'IEC958',1 unmuted
'PCM',0 100%
'LFE',0 muted 00%
'IEC958 Default PCM',0 unmuted
'Surround',0 muted 00%
'Beep',0 muted 00%
'Mic',0 muted 00%

After that i went to the audiosettings they were configured like this (defaults):
Audio output: HDMI
Speaker Configuration: 2.0
Boost volume level on downmix: enabled
- Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver: enabled
- DTS capable receiver: enabled
Audio output device: custom (plug:both)
Passthrough output device: hdmi

I changed them to the same values that i used with the openelec version and the sound still worked (also tested with 2.0 and 2.1).

I noticed that my A/V Receiver displays PCM sound while playing your testfile. Maybe your amp doesn't work with PCM?

I dont have an AMP my sound system doesnt support DTS or AC3.
Sound leaves asrock Via HDMI to TV from TV leaves as a 3.5 jack which is connects in one white/red (stereo l/r) rca plug to the audio system that inturn fake processes the audio received to 5 speakers and the SUB.

I also have unmuted all the channels. Though its a crap audio system I have no issues with any audio playback except the lesser then 48KHZ audio types

No Joy.

Code:
<audiooutput>
    <ac3passthrough>false</ac3passthrough>
    <audiodevice>alsa:plug:hdmi</audiodevice>
    <channellayout>1</channellayout>
    <customdevice>plug:both</customdevice>
    <custompassthrough />
    <dontnormalizelevels>true</dontnormalizelevels>
    <dtspassthrough>false</dtspassthrough>
    <mode>2</mode>
    <passthroughaac>false</passthroughaac>
    <passthroughdevice>alsa:hdmi</passthroughdevice>
    <passthroughmp1>false</passthroughmp1>
    <passthroughmp2>false</passthroughmp2>
    <passthroughmp3>false</passthroughmp3>

X3, my setup is exactly as yours, and audio won't play.

It won't play from videos either.

I have a DD/DTS amp, and that's a solution for me. It is not for a simple setup for my family, I am afraid.

It was a while since I did not upgrade, and I just did. Unlucky me. I have an Asrock Ion as yourself, and used your guide for CIR.

If you can not solve the audio issue, who could?

thx man

But I cant fix this issue, I dont wanna keep saying it but my illness + sleep depravation (its so painful I cant sleep) and lack of concetration Im severely unable to function...

This thread is tied to the bug report, I guess knowing Im not alone it means its gotta be more then a user settings thing....

I find it odd that an A/V Receiver that switches HDMI ports and processes the audio from it, has no PCM or optical input(s), since the latter came before the former.
Then again... brand matters down here in the consumer ghettos. I use Pioneer currently myself. I have switching issues with it between my cable provider source and my PC source and my HDMI HTPC source, and I think that Pioneer could fix it with a firmware update, but I have as yet not attempted that adventure. The unit is two years old, and they are not going to pay software engineers to write me a looser HDCP spec, even though that is exactly what is wrong with it. This audio thing here is not an HDCP thing though.

The TV and all my PCs and other sources are fine when directly connected, so it was pretty easy to pin down the culprit.

As to this scenario, I would declare it as 2.0, but keep the digital modes on, if the switches are available. They are usually grayed out. I would also experiment, after that setting, with direct feeds to the TV so that proving where the problem is at can be done. The TV might "hear" it fine, but the Receiver "pukes". Those diagnostic determinations need to be done, before cause and effect can be further investigated. Every device in the chain has to be proven or disproven, and previous success with such feeds may only be an indication of a pre-process that went un-noticed which either upgraded or downgraded the stream and which is not being performed on the current configuration.

@ lattisimo thx for testing

did you use the test file posted on firsth post?

Are your test files mp3 @ 32000hz or less then 48000hz samplerate?

When you say dharma RC2 on ubuntu 10.0 sounds like you mean you have full desktop, if so (please confirm) its not a problem cause the main test is on XBMClive RC2 installs.

Just really bad to see thta this problem is not just restricted to Asrock IONS and XBMClive in that case.

Also added more info to main post.

XBMC Version: XBMC RC2 Compiled R35567 (But using live)
OS: Maverick x64 (barebones server install)
2.6.35-22-server #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 22:02:33 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 10.10 - XBMCLive Dharma

A/V Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR707
Tele: Panasonic P50G10A
GPU: NV 9500GT
Mobo: Gigabyte thingy (can't find the number at the moment)

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe024000 irq 16
$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.

To use HDMI audio, I have to jumper the mobo to the GPU - This only works using the passthrough as iec958 - But it is definitely being passed via HDMI

Here's 3 tests, the first using my reciever, the final 2 are bypassing the receiver via it's switching controls, and lastly directly plugged from machine into tele.

Standard Mode:
XBMC Settings:
Audio Output: HDMI
Speaker Config: 2.0
Boost Volume: Enabled
DD Capable: YES
DTS Capable: YES
Audio output: default
Passthrough: iec958

Passthrough to TV speakers bypassing receiver & direct jumpering.
Audio Output: HDMI
Speaker Config: 2.1
Boost Volume: Enabled:
DD Capable: NO
DTS Capable: NO
Audio output: default
Passthrough: iec958

Conclusion: File played fine ... although through the tele it sounded like 2 koalas r00ting (well, actually the audio did play fine, just my highly tuned and receptive ears of a deaf hawk didn't like it)

This works fine on my setup. I don't use xbmc live though. Just installed a minimal x86_64 of Ubuntu 10.04 according to the XBMCbuntu wiki. It's up to date with system packages and drivers from X swat ppn.

XBMC Version: compiled from SVN 35575
Linux: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS x86_64
Computer: Zotac ION ITX E
A/V Receiver: Pioneer VSX LX52

XBMC Settings:

@ Gryph

What machine do you have?
Also are you using maverick minimal install with xbmclive ontop?

your Passthrough: iec958 on the asrock ION this is spdif which I cannot use since I dont have a compatible audio syatem.

thx for testing Gryph & cejstrup

@ cejstrup

Well Im testing XBMClive official in the interest of helping sort out bugs.

Usually I use what I have on my signature.

Seems to me that XBMCLive RC2 when installed to HDD doesnt quite get the HDMI stuff right so far. SInce Dharma is setting up the sound devices via scripts in /etc/xbmc that get run at each bootup.

I admit Im not in any condition to go meddle with that...
