No audio in external player when XBMC is running

Question
I'm using SMPlayer as an external player for 720p mkv h.264 vids.
If SMPlayer launches from XBMC, there is no sound unless I change the audio channel settings in SMPlayer (e.g., from stereo to 4.0---whereupon the audio plays, and continues to play even if I change the setting back to stereo).
If I open the very same video file in SMPlayer without XBMC running, the audio works fine.
If I *manually* open SMPlayer when XBMC is running the audio does not work---i.e., it's the same issue as when XBMC launces SMPlayer.

So it appears that XBMC is somehow blocking the sound in SMPlayer until I change the channel settings in SMPlayer, whereupon SMPlayer seems to retake the audio control and everything works fine.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? I've done a number of things to try to fix the problem, which is why I'm now running the most recent versions of XBMC, SMPlayer and Mplayer, all compiled from source.

Running Ubuntu 10.4
GeForce GT240
Audio output using ALSA through HDMI

Thanks in advance!

In System->Appearance->Skin, turn off Navigation sounds.

I can't believe it was such a simple fix.
Thank you so much.
