XBMC live dell inspiron 4100 laptop fails on launch
#1
I have been trying XBMC Live with my rather antique laptop. Details:
Dell Inspiron 4100
512 MB ram, Pentium III 1 GHz
ATI Mobility Video driver (Dell has the choice of LCD, ext-VGA or ext-S-Video), hence my interest in making use of it)
16 Mb V-ram
Audio Crystal 4205

I have tried both with the hard drive in and out of the laptop, and using both Live and Live safe mode.

On normal Live I get to the login OK, then the splash screen alternates with the following message (transient, so I may not be letter perfect):

XBMCLIve login: [ 60.624155] fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs EFI VG driver

There is nothing appropriate I can change in Dell's restricted Bios, and attempting to use the 'function + VGA/TV/LCD' control has no effect.

On Live Safe Mode, I don't get errors, but I see nothing but a blank screen. Again, Dell function keys have no effect.

The 4100 normally runs XP. The XBMCLive disc is OK: it runs on my desktop Dell without problem. And I have run the likes of Knoppix and DSL in live mode on the laptop without any issues.

Any ideas what to try next? Or does the 4100 simply not have enough grunt? -and thanks in advance.
