[windows] XBMC not responding to close
#1
Hello and sorry if this has been asked 100 times, the forum search function keeps coming up with a "fatal error".

I have 3 PC's with XBMC running xbmc 10.1 win7 and on each one XBMC never closes properly, I always have to kill the process.

I press S to bring up the menu and select to exit or restart xbmc, either way, it starts of by "Not Responding" and I wait for 10 mins then try to close it by Alt-F4 or clicking the X close button and eventually use Task Manager to kill the process. I would very much like to get to the bottom of that, and because I could not do a search, dont know if there are many others with the same issue.

My xbmc.log is at
http://pastebin.com/h3ym8YGu

I'd love to get to the bottom of this.

thanks,
Mark.

Hi,

This is a bit of a known issue with xbmc. There is a fix but it was released after 10.1 and is around here on the forums somewhere.. I'll have a look and update accordingly..

To be honest though, I now close xbmc via the alt-f4 option and avoid the close/shutdown menu completely.
I have conformation from the xbmc devs (in these here forums) that the alt f4 command anywhere within xbmc will not damage or disrupt it's behaviour. As alt-f4 by passes the close menu, the hang on exit bug never appears by closing in this manner. It's fast, safe and clean.

I'll find the exe for you and report back, at least that way you can either choose the alt f4 option (which I currently prefer) or the fixed EXE one of the devs posted here Big Grin

Here is the fixed EXE:

Thanks Patrick!
I will try that exe later.

I did do a test with the Alt-F4, and where it does close xbmc, the process is still running 2 hours later. I pressed ctrll-shift-esc to get to task manager and xbmc is still running, which means I cannot start up xbmc again until I first kill this process.

I'll report back on the exe later today, thanks again,

Mark.

hey there Patrick,
I renamed the old exe XBMC-v101.exe and replaced with the new one, but xbmc will still not exit.
Alt-F4 still leaves the process running too...

I also tried running the exe as administrator but it makes no difference.

I will try the exe on my other pc's later, thanks again Patrick.

The fix addresses an issue to do with thread locking, and from your log I don't think your system has this problem, which I assume is why the fix hasn't made any difference.

There's also an issue to do with Aero, though I'm afraid I forget the details. Try disabling/enabling Aero to see what happens.

You could try using a nightly build from http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/win32/ as I know at least some of the hangs have been fixed. The nightly builds come with a health warning because they contain experimental stuff, but I think the current nightly builds work fine. Note that the nightly builds will upgrade your database so export the database first in case you need to revert to 10.1.

Thanks JR,
I tried disabling Aero and it still does it's Not Responding thing...

I reck I will hold off on the nightly build thing, maybe wait for 10.2 and see what happens then.

Cheers for the input,
Mark.

Are you using a really old database because when I had this problem rebuilding my library from scratch solved it ?

If it is old you could just remove your "MyVideos34.db" create a new library with one movie see if it shuts down correctly if not put the old one back
Current HTPC Lian-Li PC-C37 • Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H • Intel C2D E8400 E0 Stepping • OCZ Vertex SSD • 4GB Corsair TwinX XMS2 DDR2 • Corsair HX650W Modular PSU (Free Upgrade) • LG CH08LS10 Blu-Ray Drive • Scythe Big Shuriken • Acousti DustPROOF 70mm Fan

Hi there, thanks for the reply...
I am not sure whether I have an old database or not, but I have rebuilt my library from scratch about a week ago... so does that mean my database is new, or is it a software version thing?

Thanks,
Mark.
