Video card fast enough?
#1
my old video card (7600gt) died last week and now my computer wont play 720p videos smooth anymore with the build in video. Im looking for a (cheap Smile) one to put in there that has hardware support in xbmc (what was it called, vdua or something)
Saw this one http://www.informatique.nl/514509/club-3...ition.html
It has a HDMI out does that mean it is fast enough for 720p?

The current cheap recommended card is the GT210.

Here's one for the same price on that website.
Asus AT5IONT-I in an A+ CUPID-3 + 2TB Seagate LP + 16GB SSD + Ubuntu + Samba + XBMC

Actually they have a gt220 here at the store for a good price, is that close enough to the one you recommend? And do these cheap ones do the hardware part of video instead of my main processor?

The GT is an NVIDIA chip based card, the 5450 is an ATI(AMD) chip.

The 5450 is a very popular basic HTPC video chip. You can find lots of inexpensive passively cooled 5450 cards by a variety of manufacturers.

I happen to like ATI video cards and that particular chip (have 2 of them), and I haven't used the GT210 so I can't compare them. In reading about it, the general consensus seems to be that ATI has a slightly better picture, but NVIDIA has much better drivers and stability.

Lots of people on this board like the GT210.

I expect either would work well for you.

I have a geforce 210 1gb ddr3 in my htpc and all my 1080p movies run smoothly and the system is so quiet. I do agree that the radeon 5450 is just as good, but the htpc system I have has an intel processor. I usually stick radeon with amd and nvidia with intel
