If there is subs included with the video, inside the container or as external .subs + index, or .srt files, you can access subtitles as you play the video through the onscreen audio menu (usually a speaker icon) which allows you toggle on/off subs or the keyboard 'T' will do the same. http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Subtitles

If there is no subtitles... then you will have to acquire your own subtitles (potentially you could make your own) or install the subtitle add-on "XBMC Subtitles" http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add..._Subtitles once configured will allow you to access a wealth of languages and subtitles from the world over from multiple sites.

Hello Pat, Thank you for your response!. I already have the xbmc subtitle plugin. I've configured it, but so far, it only searches a couple of sites for subs "open subtitles" and "podnapisi", and it cannot find subs for such a popular movie as kahaani!!!. Maybe a I need to play with it a bit more and add a few mores sites (if that's possible) to have a comprehensive search. Can you please recommend a good sub site for desi movies? I know desisubs is one. In any others your recommend?

But here is my problem and maybe you can verify it on your end if you have "Filmi By Nature",

Go to Movies, Hindi Movies, and select Kahanani (it's the 6th for the top), and while it says it has eng subtitles (in the title), when I play the movie, there are none, even though under audio setting, "enable subtitles" is checked. But I've also noticed that under the same settings, subtitles show "none"!!! Maybe it's just a small slip of whomever uploaded the movie, maybe it does not have subtitles! "Cocktail" for example, plays with subs, but I've noticed that they're actually hardcoded...coz "ctrl t" doesn't do anything and under audio settings (volume icon) it says no subtitles, yet it has subs! is there a way I can verify if the movie has an srt? is there a folder I can check for each movie on "Filmi By Nature" to see if they have an srt or not? Thanks Again!

If a movie has external subs, then there is external files. A movie can have them embedded, and in that case a check with something like MKVmerge would show what languages and their priority of sequence (adding or deleting or changing the default language would be possible) these files can be seen in the subtitle listing of XBMC, and of course when you have subtitles and no listing... they are as you noted hard coded into the video plane and are not removable.

I'm not sure if you've found this forum yet... http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=100795 perhaps there's something in that which might help.

Sometimes when looking for subtitle languages and run into difficulty... I leave it for a few months, and try again... by that time someone has taken the time and trouble to give us the subtitle we wanted or the original has leaked from a paywall somewhere... patience. If you really enjoy foreign films, subtitles and all, and know more than one language.. making your own subtitles is a special art and contributions in this area are enjoyed by many.

One last note... there is a left slide out menu for the subtitle add-on "XBMC Subtitles" with a few more options.
