Ah ok, never used the DSPlayer myself but wondered how mpc-hc became default. So this isn't a problem with xbmc at all since dvdplayer works and the DSPlayer build isn't in use.

Nope, purely a set-up problem - playercorefactory.xml file location I would guess.
