Compatible AGP 8x cards for 1080p
#1
Hi,

I've struggled with Ati Radeon 9800 pro and just crashed the card after those fglrx aticonfig etc issues. I would like to buy a new/used AGP 8x card for my AMD Athlon XP 2500 running on Asus A7V8X pretty old mainboard. ,Any suggestions for AGP card for watching 1080p mkv etc. movies ? I was able to run SD movies in 9800pro while there were too much lag on 1080 movies.

Would like to know if anyone using AGP smoothly for HD movies.

Many Thanks,
Mucahid

I have a HIS HD3650 AGP in an Athlon64 3200+ system (K8VM800M Rev1.x GB Mobo)
Using fglrx 12.4 (Kubuntu 12.04 default), I find Kwin performance to be quite slow (compared to open source), but if you just want pure HTPC use, XVBA works [1], at least the files I tried (not many, mind you).
I've had no luck installing the 12.6-legacy and 13.1-legacy drivers (No supported adapter found), so don't expect bug fixes.
13.1-legacy actually still does not support Xorg 1.13, so you'll have to resort to this PPA [2] if you want to use 12.10 (didn't try myself)
Overall, I wouldn't suggest the combination ATI + legacy card + AGP format...
Not much experience with Nvidia, so can't recommend any alternative...

Thanks for reply I tried second option before with 9800 card however problem was same laggy screens, all SD movies were fine. I really would like to see comments about Nvdia AGP chipsets, as ATI no longer supporting older cards Nvdia seems much more usefull. I really don't care much about sound output HDMI, just looking 1080 res via DVI/HDMI any compatible card. Thanks again for your post, i'll consider as best option running on Xubuntu (much familiar to me) in case i don't get any reply about Nvdia or any other alternates
