Lenovo/IBM slim case build startup
#1
My friend offered me an Older dell optiplex slim case or IBM/lenovo think centre slim case. So one piece scratched off the build list....
I want to go with the IBM as its a bit smaller/slimmer. Not a mini pc but close enough for me ..it's free.
I say case only because it has an old p4 processor /mobo that I have to rip out

More or less looks like this one or a tad smaller if not mistaken

Now where do I start...?
Any suggestions for hardware starting with a mobo (heard ASUS are pretty solid) with hdmi out and what RAM would match up nice , a solid wifi card(not sure if generic mobo wifi is stable) and maybe hard drive (or is it faster to run off USB stick if I'm only running xbmc on it)

ThanksBig Grin

Is there space for a low profile nvidia gt610? If so just put one in and use the existing motherboatd. I have built a couple of xbmc machines doing this with hp small form factor boxes. Generally quiet and vety cheap.

Forget wifi on a media pc,

I will check out if the card fits but this PC is uper slowwww running xp even!
Not sure if it will run smooth , my living room isn't setup for wired network so its either wifi or MoCa, any other ways around it?

Cant find the 610 , stores are sold out around here but how would the 620 work?

EVGA GeForce GT 620 01G-P3-2625-KR Video Card - 1GB, DDR3, PCI-Express 2.0(x16), 2x Dual-link DVI-I, 1x MiniHDMI, DirectX 11, NVIDIA PhysX, Fan, Low Profile

Can the older motherboard handle this newer vid card?
Here's the system specs:

Repeating my PM for the benefit of others,

Actually your machine appears to have only an AGP slot, not PCIe, so this idea isn't going to work as there aren't any VDPAU capable AGP cards. The HP DC7100 has a PCIe slot.

And adding: There are some VDPAU capable PCI cards, but I think they are all pretty old. 8400 series and possibly some of the 9XXX series.

my bad , it isactually the IBM Netvista S42, on this review it says it can handle full size pci cards.

The actual riser card is called Microstar MS-6958 and has 2 slots:

Hope this changes things, if not is it worth it to buy a micro mobo and chip for this case or just move on??

my only option is this then...lol!

Im guessing ..move on! ......as I would probably need a stronger power supply (current one is 200W) and then who knows if the mobo/processor will push this card for streaming video

Sorry about the Pm's and predictive text... , when I login from my iPhone sometimes when i click on the reply button it doesnt work...it only lets me click pm. Darn Macs!!

All the posts are cause I'm not sure which route im going. .the Nuk is looking like a good route but leaning toward the build with the g1610(great for the $) just need a good mobo to match hopefully with a good on board wifi.
Thanks for the help everyone.
