ix4-300d NAS
#1
Greetings everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I've had XBMC running on several HTPCs and Android devices for a while, but have been using my main PC as the file storage for everything (movies, music, game roms). I've been trying to get away from that as I have a few spare hard drives ready to use, but have been waiting for an affordable NAS option. I recently came across the ix4-300d NAS (Iomega) for a solid price at $170 and am wondering if anyone has had any experience using this device with XBMC? While I realize it's not as feature rich as many current NASs, I'm hoping it can replace my existing setup. I would welcome any thoughts from the community. Thanks!

Yeah, I'll let you know how it goes. I have been researching a lot and it seems like it will work. I have been also researching Plex. I am thinking of using Openmediavault on the NAS and installing both XBMC and Plex to see which I like best. Both will be new to me but I have devices like the Roku that have a built in Plex app already so that is what I am leaning toward as of now.

Read the owner's manual. Says all drives must be the same manufacturer, model, and capacity to enable the storage pool and RAID.

Capacity I can understand, but the rest seems a foolish requirement, and takes it off my list. I have drives of numerous capacity and manufacture that I would use.

I believe that can change if you install openmedivault or just make it a debian box and get rid of the Iomega os.

Well I received this NAS a couple days ago from Tiger Direct. I put in 4 new 3TB Western Digital red drives (RAID 5) and connected 2 additional 3TB USB external drives, then hooked it straight into the wireless router. After the initial setup, I was quite pleased to see that XBMC was able to automatically read the NAS from both of my Windows HTPCs and Ouya. I've since watched several hours of HD video and it's worked perfectly.

So in case anyone is curious about this NAS, my experience has been a positive one 3 days in so far. Maybe the most surprising thing of all is that I had 4 new WD drives and none were DOA Wink

Thumbs Up
I haven't opened mine yet except for checking it out. I have a few drives but good to know that you can load up 3TB drives. I have a few 2TB drives.

@fastfoo714Thank you very much for the information. Please let us know if you have anything else to share. I will do the same.

I got a new ix4-300d today and was trying to use this guide:

http://stevenbreuls.com/2013/04/install-...-300d-nas/

I am getting this error when copying the second command:

login as: root
[email protected]‘s password:
root@MilyardMedia2:/# export feed=http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs08q1armel/cross/unstable
root@MilyardMedia2:/# export ipk_name=wget -qO- $feed/Packages | awk ‘/^Filename: ipkg-opt/ {print $2}’
-sh: export: -qO-': not a valid identifier
-sh: export: http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optwar...e/Packages‘: not a valid identifier
root@MilyardMedia2:/#

If anyone can help with this that would be GREAT! I am trying to get this NAS setup for my TV PVR NAS
