linux home server hardware questions

Hi I have an intel Nuc, android tablet and some laptops running XBMC and love it.

Now, I would like to start building a home server with ubuntu server running on it.

Does the following have enough horsepower? Besides the hard drives am I missing anything? Are these parts compatible?

Cost is a factor for me but I dont want to throw good money after bad.

Initially I would use this as a media hub and file server with SB,SAB and CP . I was thinking Unraid, but possibly down the road I would like to also use this as a Web Server for my spouses small business.

Thanks for any advice

I would suggest going with an MSI board. If you are looking for a server, then that would probably be your best bet.

Have you thought about looking into something like Open Media Vault instead of a Ubuntu server? OMV is a very nice NAS setup.

Heck, you could run the server with an Intel Atom board. All you're doing is serving up files.

I'd also suggest taking a look at unRAID. Lots of us here use it. The user shares features are simple to implement and very user-friendly. So you can have single mount points for virtual drives that span physical drives - so all of your movies can appear to be in a single SMB - or NFS - share even if you have 12 drives… It's all configured via a simple web interface, and has a nice balancing point between redundancy (you can parity protect your content) and speed/power (drives are only spun up as required) It does have a licence cost - but it's not too hefty. You do need to ensure you chose compatible hardware to avoid headaches.

It is well supported by both LimeTech who produce it, and the wider user community.

I've been running it since 2008, and have migrated my hardware twice during that time (case, motherboard and switched from 500GB/1TB drives to 3TB drives) and it has just worked.
