My USB hard drive won't stay asleep

This isn't really a XBMC specific question .. but I thought some of you might be able to help. I'm running XBMCbuntu on an Intel NUC .. I have a USB 3.0 external HDD attached. After about 5 minutes of inactivity, the drive goes to sleep.. which is fine. But in another 5 minutes, it suddenly wakes up for no apparent reason. The cycle continues over and over. Doesn't matter if XBMC is running or if I'm just idling on the XBMCbuntu desktop. I've searched and searched and asked in a few other places and can't get any help.

Is there anything I can do to try to locate what is causing my drive to wake up?

A cron job running every 10 minutes?
Is there anything interesting reported in dmesg why it wakes up?
