Update availability announcements are received in the news bar in xbmc.
It is, nowadays, a common practice to provide an automatic update option to programs.
In Linux, you can apt-get your newer versions, in Android one could use the store, but in Windows 7 such options do not exist. (I haven't used xbmc on other platforms ).
I suggest Xbmc will create, on a user's request, an outer process that will download the available update and install it, or open the relevant page in the store. The process should change between platforms, and as such, be modular and scalable, and address the platform's requirements.
