Linux 1080p performance on EeeBox EB1007
#1
I'm a beginner and would appreciate any directions where to go next.

I have an Asus EeeBox PC EB1007 (Intel Atom D410 1.66GHz, Intel Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics Controller) running a minimal Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS. I installed XBMC 11 using Bram77's xbmc-ubuntu-minimal (https://github.com/Bram77/xbmc-ubuntu-minimal).

Code:
lshw -c video

shows:

Code:
*-display:0
       description: VGA compatible controller
product: Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics Controller
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 00
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
       configuration: [b]driver=i915[/b] latency=0
       resources: irq:44 memory:fbc80000-fbcfffff ioport:c800(size=8) memory:d0000000-dfffffff memory:fbb00000-fbbfffff
  *-display:1 UNCLAIMED
       description: Display controller
product: Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics Controller
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2.1
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.1
       version: 00
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=0
       resources: memory:fbd00000-fbd7ffff

720p H.264 MKV files are nicely watchable with CPU load at about 50%, but a 1080p glitches slightly every couple of seconds, the CPU is at about 96%.

Is there anything I can try and do to push the EB1007 to play 1080p nicely, or should I upgrade to something else?

Sounds like you're not using vdpau, according to the xbmc wiki the EB1007 got an ION GPU. It does look like the Bram77 script takes care of nvidia drivers and vdpau so the only thing left would probably be enabling hardware acceleration (vdpau) in the video options. Check here for an explenation on the different settings: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Settings/Videos

Better go with OpenElec http://openelec.tv/ instead of XBMC 11 and those outdated Bram77 scripts.
