I need a remote; replacing Harmony One
#1
I need a descent 'universal' remote. I run a mATX + Win 7 + xbmc.

I really have 3 basic criteria:

(1) is conservative on the number of buttons, and well designed, like the Harmony Smart remote, but doesn't set me back $130 USD.

(2) can be programmed by a 'learn' feature, so one IR remote controls xbmc + tv on/off toggle + amp on/off & volume up/down. I have all the remotes to serve as 'teachers'.

(3) IR only. I don't need RF.

The learn feature has been around for decades on universal remotes. Why can't I find a modern remote with this feature? I've look around but not found any remotes that are even 'remotely' sexy. With today's OSDs we don't need 87 buttons to push. As for controling xbmc + tv + amp with the Harmony via the buttons, it works super great but wife unfriendly Sad

I'm currently using the Harmony One, and it's so wife unfriendly it's about to kick xbmc out of the house. The main issue is someone hits the Harmony screen and selects to control a different device, then can't get back to xbmc control.

What device are you using for XBMC?

If you can find one somewhere, I would actually recommend the Harmony 200 or 300. They are similar to the One in terms of functionality, but with way less buttons.

If you are using a PC/NUC as your XBMC device, you should also consider getting an MCE compatible remote, or an Xbox One or Xbox 360 Media Remote. Read this thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=186958

It might be an extra remote to use, but better to have a simple second option than to have your XBMC box kicked out lol.

Thanks I'll check those out. Sorry, I'm running win 7 (updated original post). Hardware is mATX PC.

I don't have any problems using a MCE remote, or the Xbox variants, but they won't control my other IR devices (volume, etc) Sad If the well runs dry, then I'll get the Xbox media remote, and use the amp remote for volume and tv remote for on/off. The nice thing about xbmc is the centralization of all media & cusomization of software that's serving it. I wish we could have centralization of remote controls as well, within a reasonable budget!

While I can't speak to the quality of the remotes in question, someone posted this thread that might be worth looking at:

Hi, i'm using a one for all urc 7960 http://www.amazon.co.uk/One-For-All-Cont...te+control It has the learn (from other remotes) feature which i use for my amp. You can use the code 1972 to map mce to it. I think it's good value for money, well built. I don't know if the button layout is to your taste but worth considering.

Honestly, I think this is exactly what I've been searching for! I really want the learn feature as I think it makes it more versatile. Good to know I can plug in a code to map mce. Thanks for the help.

I just found that too after I asked. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi,

I'm looking to get a universal remote for my Xbmc Live, what IR receiver are you using with your xbmc?

Can I use this to control both my TV and Xbmc media player?

I have a CEC adapter and just use my Panasonic TV's remote. I set custom commands for the color buttons and it can fully control the TV and XBMC. The only other devices I have hooked up to the TV are for gaming though.
