Android Amazon Fire TV Disable Automatic Updates
#1
I finally gave in and retired my Apple TV 2's that just don't seem to cut the mustard with XBMC anymore. Holy cow and I glad I did. These FireTV's scream and I've never been happier with XBMC performance. So far video playback has been flawless (knock on wood) and the GUI performance is snappier than it has ever been. The ability to sideload an Airplay receiver put the final nail in my ATV's coffins. This leads in to my real question(s)...

I'm new to the XBMC-Android platform, but I would assume (I know, I know) that with the FireTV there are the same concerns about OTA updates coming down the pike and breaking XBMC as there is with devices like the Apple TV. Is this a fair statement? Does Amazon update the underlying Android O/S or does it simply update their software on top of it thus minimizing the risk?

To err on the side of caution since everything is working so well, I would like to disable OTA updates coming down randomly from Amazon. I've Googled the hell out of that question and have not had any luck other than one link in these forums that is no longer valid. I assume that is because the FireTV is still relatively new.

Any suggestions on this issue as well as any general advice on running XBMC on this platform would be greatly appreciated.

Since the FTV's root is not yet public and there is no way to stop the box from accepting the update the only way to do it is to block the update site on your router.
Go to your router's setup page, find the website blocking section in the firewall and add http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net/
There are some people that complain about breakage of some apps and advise using http://firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com/ intead.
I haven't had any problems with either.

I have an Apple Airport Extreme router and have no way to block websites on it so intead, I setup a free OpenDNS account, redirected the DNS setting on my router to it and blocked the websites from there.

Thanks, I will give that a try this evening. How is it that you have the option of which site to block? Isn't the FireTV hard coded to contact one or the other for updates?

I'm apparently a better Googler today than I was yesterday, because I came across several different links discussing this:

http://www.firetvnews.com/how-to-block-a...e-rooting/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...178&page=6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...?t=2760884

I currently have both URL's blocked and will have to wait and see if it causes any issues. I am running DD-WRT so I experimented with a couple of different ways of blocking it including access restrictions as shown in the first link and also creating a blackhole for the URL's in dnsmasq as such:
Code:
address=/amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net/127.0.0.1
address=/firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com/127.0.0.1

The blackhole method wasn't working properly until I enabled No DNS Rebind. I don't understand it enough to know if that makes sense or not, but that got it working. In the end, I am using both options to block the hosts simply because I am paranoid. Rolleyes

Resurrecting an old thread here: Did you ever find out how to do this ? Googling this problem now has this thread as hit #1 Smile
A suggested approach was to run
Code:
pm disable com.amazon.dcp
as root, but my attempts at su'ing fails:

Code:
shell@android:/ $ su
su
1|shell@android:/ $

Yes, I ended up using the method you show above once the root became public and this was possible. I still keep the firewall rules in place just in case.

A complete walkthrough of the process is here:

hey all this is the closest forum I can find to what im looking for. I hope someone can direct me to the right place or have an answer for me.
i'm looking to update to KODI 15.0 I know you can update it via adbfire but I was looking for an automatic updater for that, is that even possible ? I currently use the file manager app on amazon store to update it without adbfire. but as of late it doesn't seem to work anymore. does anyone know how to automatically update KODI ?
