I've successfully installed xbmc-13.2-Gotham in Oracle VM VirtualBox. Unfortunately I can only log in to desktop. During installation, I've opted to go directly to the Media Center, without being asked for password. On the login screen I can either choose XBMC or XBMC Ubuntu. If I opt for XBMC and enter password, I am redirected back to the login screen. When I select XBMC Ubuntu, I get to the desktop. Further, nothing happens when in desktop mode I select Sound & Video > XBMC Media Center.

Any suggestions? I was hopping to evaulate XBMC inside VM before doing actual installation.

Just do the actual installation. You should be able to install it to a USB drive which makes testing simple.

You'll just run into headaches using a VM because you you will need to install virtualbox guest additions and drivers.

just run it off the the USB stick in live mode for some basic testing.
