Hi i had the same problem and opted to build my own nas with a hp microserver and Amazon fireTV .

The HP microserver was priced better than qnap , synology solutions with 4 drive bays, low power consumption as it is always on with 4 disk slots (4x3TB WD reds raid 5), the Amazon fireTV with kodi 14 rc1 works flawlessly with it,
if you have basic tech skills its a no brainer, using freenas, nas4free windows 7/8 or linux to build it.

if you want to use it as a HTPC buy an nvidia video card with HDMI and sound going via hdmi as no onboard sound , windows 7/8 , openELEC etc and away you go, you will find lots of stuff on google here are a few links to get started
