The tests starting from the ubuntu server machine to the raspbmc pi aren't really relevant, except to verify the network connection.
You need to look at
a) firewall on the ubuntu server
b) samba configuration on the ubuntu server
When you try to access the ubuntu server, and fail, you should be able to look at the logs for the server processes (smbd, nmbd) to see what message you get.
If you get a prompt box for username and password from the ubuntu server, you've probably passed the firewall checks, and need to provide the uname and password for the samba (did you set a valid name and password for the samba ?)
