I try to edit the file VideoOSD.xml via WinSCP using root but it does not let me rewrite it. Could anyone please tell me what am I doing wrong?

You can't, not in OpenELEC. You need to make a copy of the skin, change the addonid, then apply your changes. Of course you won't get any further updates for your modified Confluence skin.
