I have just installed Kodi v5.1 to work with an established Mediaportal back-end.
First reaction is that Kodi is easier to set up and generally works much better than the MP front-end - with the exception of subtitles.
Almost all the DVB-T channels I watch in Australia have "hard of hearing" subtitles in the broadcast stream which can be switched on and off in the MP front-end with the yellow button on a standard Microsoft MCE remote. I did find an "enable subtitle" switch in the audio menu in Kodi but this did not work for me.
