Best All in one Box for Kodi (storage included)
#1
Hi guys,

Just discovered that this nice world call Kodi exist! What an awesome software BTW.

I am looking for a solution such as a NUC/Brix/Vivo to put all together Storage and media capability in order to watch into TV via HDMI.

In that way, I would like to be able to use Kodi on Windows or Linux (I do not have preference) but to have at least 2TB storage.
I will also use it for standard streaming.

Here are the 3 models I selected (but not exclusive as I really want to hear from you)

NUC5i5RYH

GB-BXi5H-5200

VivoPC VM62

I guess I will also opt for 1 or 2x 2.5 hybrid Drive with 1-2TB and 4/8GB in 1600MHz.

Please let me know if I am wrong and if you believe you could advise me something better.

Regards,

Florian

As to hardware look at this thread http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=94268
Its up-to-date and take that as starting point. Then state your essential needs, like HD audio, optical out...

Thank you MediaPi. I was actually reading this thread before posting.
Here is my current setup.

TV soniq 40 inch (Android 2.3).
Kit 5.1 logitech plugged into jack 3.5
WD 500GB External Hard Drive plugged into tv via usb.

I am looking for having a classic box for storing data in a single place (movie/picture/audio) and that I could read via HDMI with my TV.
I like the way Kodi is working and displaying library so I really want to stick with it. I do not have any preference between Windows or Linux as I am already using both. I am looking for a storage of 2TB and probably something up to 850 AUD.

Your budget pretty much opens you upto any device out there. Other community members here are about 2 years ahead of me so wait for their expert advice. But from my limited experience I would recommend to start considering other things ( with a budget like yours) such as some high def audio equipment. Nas setup (this is like storage) because I believe for your needs you can spend half your budget on an amazing box like Asus Chromebox and the other half on accessories. Don't rush in. Kodi is a hobbie. In sure you'll enjoy the journey, but yeah wait for some more experienced members Smile

Thank you MediaPi for your very kind advises. I was actually trying to avoid the NAS solution for the only reason that I prefered the all is one solution instead having a Network storage such as a Synology or a WD and for space&energy saving.

I really appreciate your help. When I actually started to think about Kodi I was actually going to build my own HTPC+gaming device based on G3258 http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/cWwY7P

I realized then I would not play so much on it so it would be better to find something cheaper and with a smaller factor.

Let me know if someone has any idea of what could stick to what I am seeking Big Grin

Florian

my .02, look ahead and not back. The future is or has been a set-top box + NAS.
Unless you have specific requirements + gaming, then a full HTPC would be needed.

Separating your storage from player give you some advantages. If you select the correct NAS, it can be years before you have to touch it again.
With the Kodi player, might not even be a year. Plus each can be updated/upgrade independently .

Just my suggestion....
AFTV (non-rooted + Kodi)
WD My Book Live NAS

Hi Shabuboy. Thank you for your precious details. It would be benefits for me even I really wanted to have only 1 box I will change my mind and opt for 1player+1NAS. If that is the case I will also change my modem-router which has only 100MB by a gibabit Lan+ a Gigabit powerline (as TV and router are in 2 different room). I did really like wifi.

Hi guys,
What about this Thecus N2310 NAS ? It is a very low power usage and quite fast with 100MB/s in reading. I am only looking for a RAID 0 as I do not care about redundancy but more about space.

Is it compatible with a Chromebox which would have XBMC installed.

I have know idea about that particular NAS, but really a NAS is a NAS.

A NAS, in basic terms, is just like another computer on your network and as long as there isn't anything problematic with the NAS itself, then you don't have to worry about it being "compatible" with any other device on your network like a Chromebox.
