Is it Android TV OS or plain Android 5.x? Should be careful with the wording, now.

I think its the plain Android 5 os. It does not say Android TV OS anywhere on their website.

HD Netflix on a chinese box? I wouldn't take their word on that, unless Netflix has very recently relaxed their certification program.
Anyway, unless they use the Android TV version of the apps, they are hardly usable with a remote.
So, big question, why not Android TV? It makes so much more sense for a STB...

Hmm I wonder if Google is blocking chinese OEMs from using Android TV. Or if there are other factors involved with it. Aka they cant really use it becuase of google stipulations on what can and can not be done with Android TV OS. While Android 5.0 is open source for anyone to modify.

I prefer to stay away from this China devices mainly due bad support. Geniatech devices are not Google GMS certified, so all apps relying on DRM support will not work and I doubt if Netflix in HD will work at this device.
Keep in mind that Geniatech already have few S8xx based devices on market but they preffer not to upgrade them to Android 5.x, but what they prefer is to release new device high priced to splash some cash from our pockets.
Geniatech use amlogic SDK so it is not pure Android 5.x it is Android with chinese crappy launcher and apps inside. I had one of their devices in past and after no Android update I was forced to sell it as there was many issues.

Is not blocking but Chinese companies dont want to pay for GMS certification to have proper support, as they simply dont care. As I stated in my previous post, Geniatech already have S805 and S802 devices on market but they refuse to release Android 5.x, as they like more to make new device and to sell it at overpriced price of 169 USD which is insane these days.... At least for this price they could introduce air mouse as Koying said, using it with IR RCU no sense....
Every rockchip, allwinner and amlogic oem device have OTA & Backup app, but of course we never saw any OTA really served from them, as when You click check for online update you never get anything as simply update is not posted nor server address for download is set...

It is not like that as You think

Same day released for S802, S805 and S812, but as I said Geniatech prefer to release new device and keep old devices non-updated, if you know what I mean. Why their strategy is like that i really cant understand
For this reason i stay away from their products, when issue appear.... no answers.
Btw. Geniatech have for some OTT boxes Verimatrix (like in Ukraine and Russia, small telecom operators using their device for OTT operations), but of course you will not find it in consumer products, as it cost.
Real and good question is why they never go beyond simple SDK compilation and fix some bugs in their firmware, which if you follow this Android devices is full of them (S805, S802 at least).

So what exactly is the story with these "Android TV" boxes, Chinese or otherwise? If they run Android 4.4.x and up then they should look fine on a TV. If they have access to the Play store then they can at least download Netflix. Is it possible that these boxes can run the Netflix app and not be able to output to a TV? Seems every ad I see for them has Netflix advertised. The boxes have a crazy range of prices. Is there a simple way of knowing if a box doesn't run Netflix on a TV via HDMI?
At $60 these are throw away items. As long as they work support for older hardware would seem to be irrelevant.
