FF/RW vs HEVC Decoding
#1
Hi guys, I have a bit of a double-edged problem.

On the one hand, I like to be able to fast forward and rewind my movies. XBMC allowed that with no fuss or problems, Kodi doesn't. It's jerky and awful, and it's a dealbreaker for me, I've tried to fix it but nothing solves the problem. So I've stuck with the final release of XBMC, and that's been fine.

Until now.

The problem is, XBMC can't decode HEVC encoded video files, but Kodi can, and this too is a dealbreaker for me.

Can anyone help me here with either of my issues?

Thanks for your time

I can tell you I ffwd and rwnd in Kodi without issue. Your case is not normal. You'll need to provide more information about the issue starting with a debug log replicating the issue. Also give information about what type of files (containers, codecs) give you troubles. Provide sample files if possible.

I redact that statement. It looks like I do have issue with rwnd. Anything faster than x2 has issues. Ffwd seems fine until I go to x32, then it has some issues. It goes smoothly then jumps, then goes smoothly again.

Numerous others are experiencing the same problem:

How do I create a debug log which shows stuttering rewinding and fastforwarding?

Which nightly would you recommend?

Scratch that, I tried the latest nightly, to no effect at all. The issues exist with every video file I have tried.

Try tomorrow's nightly. FernetMenta mentioned another PR that may improve things for you in that other thread.

Okay I tried the latest nightly and the problem is exactly the same.

Fast forwarding at 2x works for a little while, but any faster doesn't work properly. Then when I press play, it says 'seeking', and then I have to press play again to make it play.

Rewinding still just flat out does not work.

I'm having this problem as well - I ended up going back to Gotham for the time being because my wife hated dealing with it.

That log was only for the ffwd or rwnd issue. The OP referred to HVEC only in that Kodi supports it but XBMC does not. So he was debating to upgrade for HVEC and loose smooth ffwd and rwnd or keep smooth ffwd and fwnd, but not be able to decode HVEC.

I'm sorry. I understood OP wrong. I think decoding HEVC isn't related to ff/rw issues.

There are sill issues with ff/rw but imo not as big as in 13.x and before. In those versions ff/rw was utterly broken. rw did go completely wrong speed and ff was not so much better. 32x was not even close to 32x of normal speed. It did something completely different.
Nevertheless there are a more fixes planned. Unfortunately this thread is useless for doing any improvements because other than

no reasonable info was given.
