switching n54l to nettop
#1
So currently I have the following:
HP N54L
XFX HD 6450 1GB DDR3 DVI HDMI Low Profile PCI-E Graphics Card
DVBSky S952 PCIe card (low profile) with 2x DVB-S2 tuner
Stock 2GB Ram
Stock 250GB HDD

It runs fairly well, Windows 7 + Kodi + Argus. Using the Titan Mediabrowser skin which I love but can sometimes have some hiccups scrolling through media views with a lot of content.

My problem is it's small, but not miniture by any means and things are starting to get a bit cramped on my shelf with the N54L, WiiU+pad, alienware alpha, external HDD and a router. So i'm looking to upgrade (downgrade?) to something a little smaller that's capable enough to run Kodi + Live TV at 1080p.

I'm thinking of getting a small nettop in the £100-£150 range + a USB dual/single satellite tuner in the £10-£60 range. Would like some general advice on whether the nettop's in this price range would perform well and if the USB tuners are just as capable as internal PCI ones (or better).

I'm currently looking at these but haven't been able to find a ton of info on them for my intended use:

Asus EeeBox EB1033 Mini Desktop PC:

Sumvision Cyclone Windows Mini PC:

Hauppauge WinTV Nova-S-USB2/Satellite USB2.0 Box

Generic Digital Satellite DVB-S USB TV Receiver Card Tuner Box Color Black

August DVB-T205 USB Freeview Tuner Stick (with indoor aerial??)

Thanks, hope you guys can provide some insight and advice.

There is the Wetek Play - available from Openelec for €99 here:

http://webshop.openelec.tv

You can choose the dual DVB-S2 tuner version, which would be best for your needs. However it may be a little under powered for general Kodi usage?

Alternatively Tesco currently have the Acer Revo One RL85 for £129.99 using a discount code. See the details at hotukdeals here:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/acer-rev...as-2272130

It is a slightly odd shape box and may not be any better size wise than your Microserver? However it should be fine for 1080p Kodi usage and may be cheaper if you have any Tesco Clubcard vouchers?

That revo looks quite the bargain. Any idea of the cpu+gpu are better than a chromebox and if it runs quiet?

Im thinking of getting the wetek as well possibly just to run it as a tv backend as its almost the same price as a usb dual dvbs2 tuner.

Isn't the Revo based on a 2957U (as also found in the HP 260 G1) rather than a 2955U as found in Chromeboxes? Very similar - but the 7 has Quicksync hardware accelerated H264 encoding, which could be useful in Windows?

the Acer ChromeBox uses a 2957U, the others use a 2955U. QS is essentially the only difference, and not relevant for Kodi performance, so I'm comfortable calling them the same Smile

Thanks for the help, any info on the remote? Can't tell if it has proper directional keys or just a touchpad so not sure how useful it will be with kodi. Also not sure how quiet/cool it runs compared to a chromebox. With it being the same CPU/GPU it should be comparable noise and temp wise for running 24/7?
