preferred view mode

i can change view mode by calling xbmc.executebuiltin("Container.SetViewMode()") but is there any way how to change it only "first time" so user can change it to something else later

You can leave some marker, e.g. an empty file or a value in addon's settings (you can write/read arbitrary settings there, not only those that have visual controls in settings.xml) indicating that a view has already been selected. But I guess it will be simpler to just let a user select a desired mode. If I'm not mistaken, Kodi remembers a selected mode for a path.
