Not possible to use Skin Strings or Window Properties inside lists unfortunately.

Well you just made me feel good.
I worked it out!
Trick is to put it in the content items label 1 or 2. Now in itemlayout label control shows the string.
All working in a list.
Now the question is. Is this a feature request or a bug.

Yeah, if you are using a static list can put it in the <item> content.
Using skinstrings and window props directly within itemlayout and focusedlayout has been discussed multiple times before. IIRC, the performance overhead for doing this within a list would be too high and that's why you can't do it.
