The OSMC image I downloaded worked on RPi 2 but wouldn't boot on RPi 3.

2016.02-4 will work just fine on Pi 3.
Which image did you download?
You can also update any Pi 2 installation via My OSMC -> Updater, then move the card in to a Pi 3.
