I am running Kodibuntu/Jarvis on an older laptop, hooked via HDMI to my TV. Is there a way to disable the local speakers on the laptop, so that all I get is the HDMI audio to the TV?

enable HDMI as the "audio output device"
Maybe you have to enable "passthrough", too. If yes, only enable "Dolby Digital capable receiver" as most TVs can't to DTS. Don't enable any HD sound formats.
If you don't see those settings, please be sure you set your settings level to expert. Look at the bottom left on the settings menu.
