WIP Kodi HTPC and Home server Help
#1
Hey everyone, new posting to the forum but have been using the vast amount knowledge for some time as I enter the HTPC world.

So now into my topic. I built a Kodi HTPC machine about 3 months ago and have been amazed by what it can do. But, now I am wanting to do more. So far my use of the HTPC has been limited to watching TV shows from the many add-ons; things like YouTube and ESPN3, and my wife likes the Cooking Channel and HGTV. When using add-ons we add a show that we watch to our "library" and then go over to the "TV Shows Library" to watch via a stream. Works great and we have enjoyed keeping up with our favorite TV Shows after cutting the cable. I have also started creating back-ups of our movie library and storing them on a local 1tb HDD "Movies" partition.

What I want to do now is two things. First, add another Kodi machine to another room; using either an old laptop or a RasPi/Fire Stick. My goal would be to watch TV Shows that have been added to our "TV Shows Library". My understanding is this could be accomplished via UPnP or MySLQ, correct? But, now for the second thing I want to do; build a home server. The goal for the home server would be to store pictures and music, backup computers, and also host the MKV Movie files, and possibly be the source of that "TV Shows Library"(?). I have looked into many different "Server" OS like FreeNas and Amahi, and add-ons like Plex. But I am just not sure what would be best to tie everything together.

What would be the recommendations for this? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Please read this : http://kodi.wiki/view/Official:Forum_rul...ed_add-ons Discussion of banned add-ons is not allowed here... Suggest you remove references to stuff that relies on piracy to function. Apologies if this feels heavy handed - but increasingly people are equating Kodi with watching free content (which other platforms charge for). This is nothing to do with Kodi, and not supported by the Kodi development team...

For NAS OS, see if this helps you: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=262645
Be ready to get plenty of answers and different ones just as link above.

To have all media in a NAS and access from any Kodi (mysql not necessary for this):
http://kodi.wiki/view/Media_sources

mysql will allow you to watch one show in one room and continue where you left on another room/device.

And last, IHMO the machine you have are overkill if just use for media player. But to each their own.
For the NAS, well it all depends on your requirements.

Thanks Shabuboy.
The thread on OS is helpful, yet still not sure if it solved anything. Guess I might need to try some and see what I like.

I was wondering if the file share that you linked to was possible, I just had not found it yet.

And yes, both machines are a bit overkill. But the cost was not too bad and plus it allows me years of options and flexibility in the future.
